Button Head Cap Screw, also known as Allen head screws or Hex drive socket capscrews are a fastener that is commonly used in automotive, electronics, manufacturing and machinery applications. They have a low domed head with a wide bearing surface that is less likely to snag on moving machinery or tools.
They are used where the appearance of the screw is important and when there is not enough material thickness to countersink a flathead screw. They also have a larger face area that distributes the force of the screw more evenly than a flathead screw.
Unlike bolts and nuts that create a tensile load, socket set screws generate a compressional or clamping load to keep parts in place. This is accomplished by their socket that accepts an Allen wrench or hex key.
The hex drive allows for more precise tightening and enables higher torques than a traditional Phillips or slotted driver. This means a quicker install and a reduced chance of cam out when under a heavy load.
Metric & Multistandard carries ISO 7380 button socket head cap screws in Property Class 10.9 along with A2 and A4 Stainless Steel. They are available in a wide variety of heads, threading and custom features, check out our EZ Screw Builder to see all the options!
Pan Heads, Mushroom and Square drive screw types have a similar shape but differ in their application. Pan heads have a smooth rounded head that offers an attractive finish for decorative applications, they are also commonly used in security and tamper-proof fasteners as they do not have protrusions that can catch equipment or tools.
