Perth is somewhat of a lonely city, miles away from any other sizable center on the west coast of Australia. It’s isolation makes it a unique and interesting place to visit, and it is a gateway to the beautiful natural beauty of the Golden Outback in Western Australia and the wild west coast which verges the Indian Ocean. The city is on the coast and has some great beaches, and also sits on the banks of the Swan River. It is a friendly, peaceful and safe place to visit and live.
The coastal plains of the Swan River have been significant to the Whadjuk Noongar people for a very long time, and the area was first sighted by settlers in 1697. It was first considered unsuitable for agriculture, but eventually became the first European settlement on that side of the country, known as the Swan River Colony. It was later called Perth, and the colony of Western Australia was founded. WA joined the Federation of Australia in 1901. In 1933, it was on the verge of separating and becoming independent, but this did not happen, so Australia remained intact! Perth has enjoyed growth in the past decades due to the natural wealth and resources of the surrounding area- gold, iron ore, nickel, diamonds, coal, oil and natural gas, among others.
Perth’s CBD is located along the river, 10 kilometers inland. Here you can enjoy the shops, restaurants, cafes and bars of the city center, and also the sizable King’s Park, where you can enjoy some greenery, walk alongside the river and get some great views by climbing the DNA tower. Also in the center are some great museums and galleries to give you an idea of the art and culture of Western Australia- the Western Australian Museum, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts and the Perth Cultural Center. It is also possible to get in a photo with some friendly kangaroos at Kangaroos in the City. Unfortunately they are made of bronze- but keep an eye out for the real deal if you should venture out into the outback!
The beaches are a major draw card, and should be visited by everyone who comes to the city. Public transport will easily get you to Scarborough beach or Cottesloe beach, both beautiful white sand swimming beaches and both patrolled by lifeguards. Naturists should try Swanbourne, the only beach which allows nudity.
Fremantle is the port that serves Perth, and is a city on it’s own right although it appears as a suburb of Perth. It makes a great day trip as it has a different vibe than the bigger city. Known as Freo to locals, it is an easy 25 minute train journey from the CBD. Freo is a great place to get fish and chips and watch the comings and goings of boats, from fishing trawlers to cruise ships.
